On May 18, Middle East scholars from the University of Oxford and the “Rome MED Dialogues” network gathered at Brasenose College for the Regional Meeting on “The Future of Peace in the MENA Region: Managing Conflict in a ‘Post-Middle East’ International Order”. They discussed about shifting geopolitical alliances, endogenous and exogenous threats, and how these have been affecting peace efforts in the region. Various case studies have been analysed in depth: the Syrian crisis, international interventions in Libya, the Israeli–Palestinian conflict, Lebanon’s political vacuums, mobilisation in Egypt, and the future of the Iran-Saudi rivalry. Developments in these countries are redefining a post-2011 regional order, in which the experts seem to observe an increased multipolarity, a potential “regionalisation” of peace efforts but also the strengthening of authoritarian practices.
